1800's Stippled Deck (unknown)

1800's Stippled Deck. Unknown, United Kingdom. Full regular deck, French suited, 52 single-headed cards. Size: 66mm x 95mm.

Deck make-up:
Hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades: 1-10, jack, queen, king.

An interesting deck, dated sometime between 1800 to 1825, housed in the collection of the British Museum in London. The deck is believed to be English. It consists of black, stippled, printed drawings on pasteboard, the pips of which are hand-coloured and form part of the images. The court cards are also hand-coloured but seemingly to a higher quality than the pips. The cards were acquired from a "C. Hamilton" in 1868. The scenes are historical but there seems to be no real theme linking them.
