After Tarot (Lo Scarabeo)

After Tarot. Lo Scarabeo, Italy. Full divinatory tarot deck, Mediterranean suited, 78 double-sided cards + divinatory-meanings booklet. Size: 66mm x 120mm.

Deck make-up:
Trumps: 0-21.
Pentacles (i.e. coins), wands (i.e. clubs), cups, swords: A, 2-10, foot jack ("page"), mounted jack ("knight"), queen, king.

The After Tarot was released in 2016 by Lo Scarebeo (in fact before its sister deck, the Before Tarot). This pleasing pack was authored by Pietro Alligo, with the artwork by Giulia F. Massaglia. The images on the After Tarot are set in time just moments after the familiar Pamela Colman Smith artwork of the 1909 classic Rider-Waite-Smith tarot. For example, on the Tower card, the tower is now actually collapsing, after being hit by a thunderbolt. On The Lovers, Adam has got over his passive stance with Eve and is now offering her the apple of temptation. The 3 of swords shows the heart with its wounds bandaged, the swords having now fallen out. And so on.s

An issue (for me) is that, as with the Before deck, somebody has apparently seen the need to alter the colour palette of the original PCS artwork – the lettered panels on these cards have been changed from the grey of the originals to a dark yellow, and the blue hues have been swung round to be more green in colour.

The deck is also available as part of a kit, which comes with a 160-page book by Corrine Kenner. I don't know how much content is shared with the book in the Before Tarot kit.

Click on any card to explore the design. Optionally, using the control below, you can display three cards for each rank: the card from this deck's sister deck, the Before Tarot; the card from the original Rider-Waite-Smith tarot; and the card from this deck.

Comparative images shown (in order: Before Tarot, Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, After Tarot (this deck)):

Trumps

Pentacles (i.e. coins)

The goblin figure on the page is a very strange idea and doesn't seem to fit with the tone of the rest of the pack.
Sometimes the artist seems a bit lost for inspiration. For example, on the knight, the figure seems to be admiring his pentacle, but that's pretty much what he did on the Pamela Colman Smith original too, so we don't seem to have moved on time-wise. Similarly, on the queen – aren't the PCS card and the After card a little too similar?

Wands (i.e. clubs)

Cups

Swords

There are some more examples here of the After cards not really being much different from the corresponding PCS "middle" cards: the 7, for instance, and the queen.
